The Pancake Doc with his lovely wife and 2 boys

Are you a busy professional who dreams of making an incredible breakfast for your family on the weekend but you don’t have any cooking experience and don’t know where to start?

You have come to the right place!

I am a busy surgeon who loves making pancakes on the weekends for my lovely wife and two boys. My journey to become “The Pancake Doc” started 3 years ago when I decided to pursue additional fellowship training about 4 hours away from our current residence. For one year, I had to live away from my family during the week. I would drive home on Friday nights to spend the weekend with my family. I started waking up early on Saturday mornings, in order to make pancakes for my then three year old son. Pancakes were one of his favorite things to eat.

I grew up in a family with a mother who was an excellent cook and baker but I never really took the time the learn these skills in the kitchen. After I got married, I realized I married a wonderful woman who doesn’t really like to cook. Well, I like to eat and I like to eat well, so I decided to teach myself how to cook. I realized I really enjoyed cooking and sought to learn more. Pancakes was always something I struggled with. I tried making pancakes from scratch, but they never seemed to turn out quite right. I initially resorted to making pancakes from a pre-made mix in a box in order to get those nice fluffy pancakes. However, I was determined to figure out how to make the perfect pancake from scratch. I tried different recipes and read books and blogs on basic baking techniques until I figured out what worked best for me.

On those Saturday mornings, my son often woke up early and discovered me in the kitchen. Of course, he wanted to help make the pancakes. As I developed my knowledge and skills in making pancakes, I also realized I was getting great quality time with my son. I looked forward to those Saturday mornings more than ever as a time to build a strong bond with my son. Now several years later, I have continued the tradition of making pancakes every Saturday morning. Though trial and error, I have figured out the right amounts of ingredients and right techniques to make delicious light and fluffy pancakes ever time. More importantly, I have found something my son and I routinely do together. I use our time together to teach him not only the basics of cooking, but about other important skills in life. We now have another son, and although he is not old enough to help make the pancakes yet, he enjoys eating the pancakes.

I created this blog in order to share my techniques and recipes for making pancakes. I also hope to inspire you to start cooking with your kids as well. Let me, The Pancake Doc, to give you the right prescription for a weekend filled with great fun and great food!
